What do you think?
It rained for 24 hours straight at the start of the week, and only when it was gone did I realize how much I miss the rain. Actually what I really miss is what comes after the rain. The clean washed out smell in the air, the clear skies and the cool weather. I didnt even mind stepping into a few puddles of mud and water, or driving slowly, or the overcast skies. Come to think of it I actually like gray overcast skies regardless, even though I find the clear sunny blue skies of Los Angeles too blinding and hot, just like its people.
So after Katrina (actually its still happening thanks to Rita), I got a bit nervous about being in Los Angeles so I started Googling. This is what I found (or didnt find):
1. Flooding and hurricanes in New Orleans was 2nd on FEMA's (Federal Emergency Management Agency) list of most potential and dangerous disasters. Los Angeles came in 3rd for tsunami and earthquake. 1st is a terrrorist attack on a chemical or nuclear plant on the East Coast.
2. There is no existing Federal or State evacuation plan for a tsunami in California. There is also no concrete, or should I say existing emergency plan for a post 'Big One' disaster.
3. Read this article about FEMA and Homeland Security. Their role in a disaster is not to help people and save lives. That is secondary. Their primary role is to protect the government and keep it functioning. Once this fact sinks in, New Orleans actually does make sense, very non-assuringly.

I think you should move to DC. But on the other hand, susceptibility to terrorist attacks is equally as frightening as vulnerability to Mother Nature's mood swings. ~c
